Today begins the great experiment. I'm so excited I could hardly sleep last night.
What can 8th graders apply from the design protocols familiar to Startup weekends to an 8th grade engineering challenge on Newton's 3rd law?
Thankfully I will get a chance to see for myself as my 6 science classes test out the protocols the next two days. We have The Lean Lab coming to help lead us through a compacted/trimmed down version of Startup weekend...pitching, designing, testing, re-designing, collaborating, and on. Thanks to Carrie and Katie, my school's PTO and a principal that is out of the world in how she supports teachers, we'll be doing some action research the next two days to answer that question.
We'll be using the Matchstick Rocket Won't Launch scenario to grab their attention.
Does this process inspire 8th graders?
Does it make the engineering cycle more accessible?
Will students figure out how to collaborate better and apply science knowledge to problems they are trying to solve?
Stay tuned. The two day experiment begins in a few hours.
