Figuring Out What we Know About Being Researchers

Narrow
Exact Phrase
Trim back the URL
Seek Similar Pages

All of these seem all fine and good on the worksheet, but which ones do you think will really help you when you need to search something out for a class project?

Think of something you've had to research in class over the past couple of weeks, honestly would there ever have been a time that this would have helped out. Why would it have helped? Or do you think it might have been a better bet to have just used a book? Do you have any idea when it would be better to just use a book instead of a computer?

when i was looking for bugs for a science this year i used 1 book and didnt get that much information then when i used google and otrher internet sites i found alot more information that whay i think that the internets a beter tool or looking for information and works alot better then a book then might of been written in the 70s because the internet updates itself.

In C.A we have been doing a project about us and the years we've been living. We looked at almanacs and used SIRS and EBSCO alot. I think it would have totally helped to be able to use NETS. I think there is an advance search on SIRS. It really wouldnt be easier to use a book for what were doing because when you use EBSCO or SIRS it gives you like a bunch of magizines vs. you looking through about 50 magizines. But for using an almanac to find fast facts might have been a little easier because you wouldnt have to wait for the computer to load or worry about the search results. I also find it better to use an atlas to find the exact position of a place instead of using a computer. But to find directions, http://www.mapquest.com or other sites are really handy.

i think that it would be better to use a computer because, it is faster and it takes less work than too look up each and every thing in a book. that is why i think that it would be much easyer to use the internet verses a encyclopedia or other book.

I think it would help finding information a lot easier and alot faster. But sometimes it might be easier to use a book. I think the only time you would really want use a book is when you need a map of a place. exp. greece, japan, china, ect.. So a computer would be easier if you were doing a project for school, or something.

I think they are were good things to use because they norrow your search and help find things easier. I think books have there place if you have to find things like a place then do use it but other wise I use the encrta , groiler or britanica for all my resreach

I think narrowing and seeking similar pages are the best ways to research because they will probably give you the best websites. It wasn't last year but, nets would have helped me out when I was researching an animal last year. It would have helped because there were a lot of websites but some of them were not good. it would have been better to use some books because they would be accurate, but some books don't have a lot of information. i think it is better to use the internet for researching animals because the web sites usually have a lot of info.

I think that the NETS would probably be better, because i couldn't find a whole lot of books and it took me longer. Every single time I looked up something, it would say the same thing as all of the other websites. I think that if I did an exact search, then I would get a lot more information. I noticed that when I used the books, they were easier to find the copywrite and the auther and the city that it was made in. I do like the computers better because they were a lot faster than the books.the things that would be hard to find on the computers are probably maps, milk, orange juice, etc. There are a lot of things that would be hard to find.

I think the ones that will help me for a class project are seek similar pages and narrow because If I am on a website I can narrow and don't get a lot of websites and look through some do my project. similar pages will help me because i can type in one website and it doesn't give me enough imformation i can go to similar pages for that websites and will help me than. i researched on this animal and plants project in science and i think it would of helped me a lot because I didn't get a lot of imformation! I think it would be better to use a book because it might give you the exact imformation but a computer won't.

I think the most useful letter in NETS is N for Narrow because it makes the search more specific and makes it easier to look up an exact thing. Sometimes it is easier than using a book to research a topic. If I was looking up Atlantis, the lost coninent, then I would want to use the net. That way it is like i am searching many books instead of one. If i used a book then it might not give the exact information I was looking for, but if I use the net and put down everything I am looking for on the subject of Atlantis then it will come up with more than one site that gives me everything I need.

I think that narrow is the easiset to use because, it refines your search to just what you are searching for. I think its easier to use books because there are books on just that topic with a lot of information. When on the internet there are sites with information but they also have other info on them.

The N also helps so you don't just get a whole bunch of junk on things that you don't want. If I didnt use Narrow then I could get all this useless information that I don't need.

I think the NETS strategies would be a good idea because you can trim down stuff and find more info more effectively and more quikly. I like the Narrow strategy the best because it allows you to find EXACTLY what you want. I think the NETS strategies are very effective but books can be better sometimes like when you have to do something fast like look at an atlas and get a location. What resources you use deend on what type of info you need to get.

N for Narrow could be an good recourse to use because sometimes when you have a book you don't just type in some of the different phrases to figure out little peices of your research, there is so many random things that you can learn from your subject. E for Exact could be a very good recourse because you can type in so many little things about your topic that you want to learn, but still when you look in a book you never now if it has the little things you want or if it is going to take you three hours to find the little tid-bits you want.

I personaly think that Similar pages works better becuase it would make it a lot easier for you. First of all, when you find what you are looking for, but it doesn't have enough information, you can easily just go to a similar page and get more and more information.
There have been many projects we have done in the past couple weeks, like in Speech and Drama, for our demonstration speech, this would of helped out a lot because there were a lot of people with very unique and "inventive" things, and there wasn't that many websites on there topic. Another one is a big one, our Science project. I got 14/15 of my notecards out of one book. It really depends on what kind of book you have though. There are many websites with more information than needed. I agree with Kaitlin exactly. Books are better because it does give you exact information, but similar pages is better because you get a lot more sources because sometimes you have to have a certain amount of sources, like two or more. So I do think that the computer is a great source if you use similar pages, but books are better becuase they can give you better information and exact information.

I really think that the Similar phrase is the best because you can get so many hits with the similar phrase. It would make alot simpilar to use and you probably would not get confused. When you use the similar phrase you can get more information. Cause there are so many links to click on the is the phrase you are looking for. Some other ways you can't find much on because it is something different. Like trim the web address. Every time you trim the url address you will probably lype something different each time. Which would make you really confused. Also similar phrases narrow it down. I totally agree with Kaitlin. Plus if i go somewhere else and i type in my topic then you probably won't really get any hits. When you use similar phrase you will get tons of hits.

I think that all of the tools that are used on google are helpful. My favorite one was the one S, or "Similar to," because if you are doing a report on Dinosaurs, and you find a good site on them, but you've already used all the useful information on the site, but some you don't have enough you can click it, and maybe get all of your info on one search. I think the web is better than books. It is faster, and more effective. I wish I would've known about these tools before today, because it would've shortened my time significantly. All of the tools are very helpful.

In C.A. we where doing this newspaper about our lives and we had to choose three years to research.I chose 1991, 1999, and 2002.
Anyway i had the hardest time geting the info and it took me FOREVER!!!I was up untill 9:30 P.M. working on it. If I had known that there was a similar link button, it would have taken me so much less time to get it all dine. But now that I know, I'm going to have a much easier and less time consuming expiriance.
Now that I know there is a way to get alot more good info. And there will be a much better time in my future.

I thnk that it would be most useful to use simalar to, because if you were to seek simalar pages as to another one. If you were to find a site that you really liked then if you were to look for another site simalar to it, then you would like that simalar site just as much because they are very simalar. If you were trying to finish a project and you liked the information then find a simalar site to it and you would get information just as good as you got from your first site.
I think that it is easier to use a book, because you wouldn't get distracted by any other stuff on the internet.

I think that trim back the url would be the best for me. I think it would be the best for me because, you will be able to find more information or the subject are looking for. Last year, when I was doing research for social studies they gave us a really long url. So i thought to cut it down, and I found a lot more information then I thought I would.

I think that using the internet will get you a lot of information. I think that the four methods will help you break down your work so that it's easier for you. Now, at times, a book would be more helpful because sometimes the internet has too many choices. A book on the other hand, will narrow down some of the information. Overall, Mrs. R's methods work really well!

In my opnion, I think that Narrow would work the best. It breaks down all your information, and gives you a variety of choices to choose from. Not that the others don't, I just think that Narrow would work the best. On the other responses I heard someone say "I think the only time you would really want use a book is when you need a map of a place" I totally agree with that. If you need a ton of info. then you should use the internet, but if you need to see a map or something quick, use a book.

I think that NETS will help me in the future because in the past I have researched something in a book and I have found a little bit of information, but when i go to the internet, specifically Google.com, I found a lot more but if I would have known how to narrow the search or to use an exact phrase, I would have probably found even more info for the time I spent since it would filter out the junk that I didn't need.

If you use NETS, I think it would be easier to find information because so many people have put information on the World Wide Web that it would be so easy to find the hardest of things. But sometimes it could be hard because alot of people just put the wrong thing that you were looking for. I think N, or Narrow would be easiest to use because it shortens the unwanted information and stuff that makes no sense.

The one that would help me the most would be trim back the url. Because I can use it when I am searching for info
